He and Somira began sailing together in 2005. They have been in perpetual motion since - working, traveling and sailing together for 20 years (16 years of these with their children).

After 2 circumnavigations, they have built a strong network of marine professionals all over the world. These industry pros are not just friends & business partners - they are world class sailors, designers, and product innovators.

James is a professional climber, sailor, & independent marine consultant with a vast foundation of experience with project management & risk management, especially in extreme environments.

He was an alpine mountain guide for 32 years (6000m+ peaks), trained & worked search & rescue dogs (cadavers/explosives), did avalanche rescue & recovery, and developed handicap adaptive sports programs in Colorado and Norway.

When he wasn’t climbing or skiing, James made ocean passages on his own sailboats and delivered vessels for his clients.

He sailed solo around the world on a Finot-Conq Open 40 via the Southern Ocean, started a family, then made a second circumnavigation on the same Open 40 with his family.

The family voyage he and Somira made with their two oldest children in June 2011 is still ongoing today. They are now sailing on a 50’ Bosgraaf Trimaran with their six children and have been based for the last five years in South America.

SOMIRA SAO

Somira was born in a Khmer Rouge work camp during the Pol Pot regime. She escaped Cambodia & immigrated with her parents to the United States at age 3 as a refugee. She became a US Citizen at the age of 12. She worked in Cambodia with AUSAID & the Australian Red Cross to document amputee beneficiaries of their landmine survivors program.

With her children, Somira has mountain biked dusty dirt roads, floated remote rivers, horse-packed, and made long ocean passages. She has given birth in four different countries.

She is freelance writer, pro photographer, visual artist & working mother of six.
