James and Somira began sailing together in 2005 and have been in perpetual motion ever since - working, traveling, and sailing together for 20 years, with 17 of those years alongside their children. Through two circumnavigations and extensive global voyaging, they have built a strong network of marine professionals worldwide.

James started sailing at age 8 in the Great Lakes and has been a professional sailor and independent marine consultant for 42 years. He brings a vast foundation of experience in project management and risk management, especially in extreme environments.
His expertise extends beyond sailing - he has been an alpine mountain guide since 1974 (6000m+ peaks), trained and worked with search and rescue dogs (cadavers/explosives), conducted avalanche rescue and recovery operations, and developed handicap adaptive sports programs in Colorado and Norway.
James sailed solo around the world on a Finot-Conq Open 40 via the Southern Ocean, then completed a second circumnavigation on the same vessel with his family. The family voyage he and Somira began with their two oldest children in June 2011 continues today. They now sail on a 50' Bosgraaf Trimaran with their six children, having been based in South America for five years before recently moving to the Caribbean.

Somira was born in a Khmer Rouge work camp during the Pol Pot regime. She escaped Cambodia and immigrated to the United States with her parents at age 3 as a refugee, becoming a US citizen at age 12. She later returned to Cambodia to work with AUSAID and the Australian Red Cross, documenting amputee beneficiaries of their landmine survivors program.
As an adventurous mother, Somira has mountain biked dusty dirt roads, floated remote rivers, horse-packed through wilderness, and made long ocean passages with her children. She has given birth in four different countries and is a freelance writer, professional photographer, visual artist, experienced sailor and working mother of six.
